How to Return a Parcel to China

Returning a package to China can be complex: customs formalities, seller requirements, variable delivery times, and choice of carrier. Good preparation can help you avoid return refusals, customs delays, and lost packages.

Beware of customs delays

Parcels returned to China are frequently held up at customs.

In many cases:

  • only the recipient in China can pay the customs fees
  • sellers or platforms often refuse to pay these fees
  • if the fees are not paid, the parcel is usually returned to the sender

To limit this risk, we strongly recommend:

  • declaring the package as “Returned Goods”
  • choosing express delivery, which is often more reliable for international returns.

Important : if a package is blocked, refused, or held by Chinese customs, Happy-Post cannot provide any compensation for loss, as these decisions are made solely by the customs authorities.

Check the seller's return policy

Before sending your package, check the seller’s return conditions.

Each store or marketplace has its own rules:

  • return period (often 7 to 30 days after receipt)
  • products accepted or not (some electronic or personalized products may be excluded)
  • return shipping costs paid by the buyer or seller

Failure to comply with these conditions may result in a refusal of reimbursement.

Obtain return authorization

Before shipping, contact the seller to obtain their approval.

Some sellers require an RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) number, which must be indicated on the package.

Also check the exact return address, as some sellers use logistics warehouses located outside of China.

Always keep the seller’s written confirmation.

Prepare the package correctly

A poorly prepared package may be refused or damaged during transport.

To avoid problems:

  • use a sturdy cardboard box
  • protect the product with bubble wrap or protective packaging
  • keep the original packaging and accessories if requested
  • include the invoice or proof of purchase
  • indicate the order number or RMA

Customs declaration

All packages sent outside the European Union must be declared to customs.

For product returns, clearly indicate:

Returned goods

This notation indicates that the package is a return and limits the risk of taxes.

If possible, include:

  • the original invoice
  • the documents requested by the seller.

Track your package

Always keep:

  • the tracking number
  • proof of shipment

Tracking allows you to check the progress of your package and react quickly if there is a problem.
Once it arrives in China, the package may be handled by a local carrier.

Provide the tracking number to the seller to facilitate confirmation of receipt and reimbursement.

What do in case of a problem

Despite all precautions, certain problems may arise: customs delays, lost packages, or refusal by the seller.

In the event of a customs delay, it is important to note that Happy-Post is not responsible for the decisions of customs authorities and cannot intervene to release a package. In most cases, only the recipient in China can be contacted by customs and pay any fees that may be charged.

In this case:

  • keep all proof of shipment
  • keep all correspondence with the seller
  • if necessary, open a dispute with the seller or the purchasing platform (AliExpress, etc.).
